Best for Students, Designers, Corporate

Kalakari means craftsmanship. Varanasi is known as holy city, the city of temples, a spiritual, religious, educational and a centre for artisans. A lot of crafts are only significant to Varanasi like Silk weaving, wooden toy carving, Gulabi Minakari (silver metal painting), black pottery, carpet making, block printing and clay pottery.

Through “Kalakari”, we will try to understand and learn the art of Gulabi Minakari (a silver metal painting art transferred to few families of Varanasi by Nawabs and Mughals). We will also visit the Wooden Lacquered toy making and weavers village wherein we will learn the Handloom weaving and understand the challenges the weavers are facing, opportunities and threats. A dedicated workshop will be organised everyday only on learning Gulabi Minakari for 6 days after the end of which we intend to create a product ready with certifications. The workshop would be conducted at the house of 2 times National Award Winner. The workshop requires focus as the paintings done on silver metal which are very intricate & fine and sable brushes with thinnest hair is used to create designs. It also requires highest attention, continuity and team work spirit right from moulding, to sketching to filling up the colours and finishing same in furnace. One will have to
spend time in houses inside lanes of Varanasi which are also workshop for the families.
