“Chitrakari” (Village Mud House Tribal Art Sohrai & Khovar Paintings – A Rural Art Immersion) by Justin Imam & Alka – Pioneers of Restoring Tribal Art
Jharkhand is a land of Forests, Tribes, minerals, natural resources and industries. This lush green piece of land is less talked about and is less explored and in year 2018, it received award for cleanest state in India. In the wild and isolated hills lies village of Hazaribagh known for an art practiced by young girls & tribal women. They preserve the themes, colours, techniques, designs in their memories and when they get married and go to another village, they bring the local style and art with them decorating their new shelters. They paint their relationship with nature, birds, animals and sometimes imaginary birds and animals from local beliefs and stories like four legged bird “Chibba” or “man bird”. The village mural paintings are passed from mother to daughter. Very less has been done by government, local bodies and workshopism ecosystem to restore and preserve this fading art form limited to few villages and tribal communities.
With “Chitrakari”, we want people to understand tribal cultures, learn the art and also support the community for a sustainable living
